It's hard when they're saying to me, "Oh, Amanda, you haven't quite bought that brilliant player in at this price." You know, we were delivering, but it was hard when the management team, if they can't tell the management team off and say, "Why isn't this being done?" Well, Amanda and Murdad are there all the time. So we needed to give the management team time to deliver. I think we've also been able to raise a great deal of capital to invest in other businesses. So we haven't, if we'd not had the success at Newcastle, maybe we would not have been able to do that so well. Well, ydych chi'n ddweud o'r Rhannus Davle? West Ham? Oh, gos! Amanda Staveley highlights the challenges faced in managing expectations at Newcastle United, emphasizing the need for patience from the management team to deliver results. The success at Newcastle has enabled significant capital raising for further investments, showcasing the interconnectedness of sports and business growth.

The focus on people as a key indicator for business acquisitions underscores a strategic approach that values management quality over mere financial metrics. This insight suggests that investors should prioritize leadership capabilities when evaluating potential investments, particularly in high-stakes environments like sports franchises.

Would you be part of the Premier League? Yes, yes, definitely. That was always your ambition? Yes. To play a role. And I know you've always been a broker, and for me, I guess a Newcastle deal felt a little bit different. So what did I do? I went up to a Newcastle game, and it was a Newcastle Liverpool game, and I walked into St. James's, and I just had goosebumps. And I think over the game, they flew a banner, 'Save Our Club,' and the city was alive. And it was the most brilliant place with brilliant fans, and we just, that was it. I mean, what was it, your proudest moment for Newcastle? Oh, there was just such a privilege to work with these amazing people and PIF and the wonderful Reuben family. So we were able to take the plan to PIF and say, 'Look, we think there's a really great plan to build by Newcastle.' I mean, this is not an easy deal. You're negotiating between the UK Yes. And the issues between being were quite rightly needed to be navigated. So I kept going between knocking everybody's door down, which one thing I'm not is shy. And I think we'd actually got to know the business so well before we bought it because it took so long. So we got to know our PIF colleagues so well. The plan was gone through in detail, the focus. What are we doing? Where are we on the journey? And we were building relationships but then obviously you know those.
Analysis

Amanda Staveley expressed her ambition to be part of the Premier League through her role in the Newcastle United deal, highlighting the emotional connection she felt during a game at St. James's Park. The negotiation process with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) was complex, requiring careful navigation of UK regulations and building strong relationships with stakeholders.

The hyperscaler sector is emerging as a significant player in the U.S. debt market, potentially accounting for up to 25% of investment-grade issuance. Despite over $220 billion in issuance, the market is not experiencing crowding, with tight spreads indicating strong demand and potential for security-level dispersion.

Smart money should note that the resilience of the hyperscaler market amidst substantial issuance suggests a robust underlying demand, which could lead to differentiated performance among individual securities. This dynamic may present opportunities for selective investment as the market evolves.

No, it was principle. I think once I'd read the judgment, that's why I did it. And so now anybody that knows about me and questions how much I did that transaction knows that that judge said that single 34-year-old girl basically bailed the bank out. And that's why I did it. You got dragged through the mud. I mean, there were some pretty, pretty unpleasant things said about you. Yes. Some of the attacks felt personal? Yes, they were, they were. But it was 2008 and I think this was before me too. And therefore you were just, you were just used to that. I'm not a hardcore feminist because I've learned not to be. It's not the way I deal with things. You know, words are, I could deal with. I didn't kind of want to sit there and go, I want to complain. I'm not someone who, you know, beats a drum and says you know I pull me pull me and so I took it very hard firmly on the chin I made my peace very well with Barclays I was pleased with the result of the court and the mediation we've had so I'm feeling very calm about life and people have apologized since then so yes the Barclays litigation actually was very cathartic in the end.
Analysis

Amanda Stavely's legal battle with Barclays highlights the complexities of high-stakes financial deals, revealing both personal and institutional challenges. The court ruling acknowledged her significant role in the bank's bailout, yet also exposed the underlying sexism in the financial industry during that era.

The outcome of the litigation serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and trust in financial transactions. Smart investors should note that even successful deals can lead to prolonged legal disputes, impacting reputations and future opportunities.

But because they make for different reasons, and this was a strategic relationship. And actually, I was led by the fact, and they were being led by the fact that this is an amazing strategic relationship for Abu Dhabi to have with Barclays, which it always was. Almost a decade later, that same Barclays deal lands Amanda Stavely back in the spotlight, this time in court. She sues the bank for around $2 billion, arguing Barclays misled the market about its deal with Qatar. Barclays denied wrongdoing and said the claims were without merit. The trial also revealed a series of internal Barclays' emails in which bankers referred to Stavely in sexist terms. In the end, Barclays won the case. The judge ruled Stavely wasn't entitled to the damages she was seeking, but the ruling wasn't a complete victory for the bank. The judge found that Barclays had deceived Stavely during the fundraising process, and he described her as a tough, clever and creative entrepreneur. So I wanted to understand what happened. How does one of the defining deals of your career end with a years-long legal battle against the very bank you helped bail out? So what happens with Barclays? Because this was a great deal and then you decided to sue them in 2015. Yes, yes, yes we did. Because it was a shock. So when we did the deal, Barclays said to us in writing and verbally that the deal that I had was exactly the same as the deal with the Qataris.
Analysis

Amanda Stavely's legal battle with Barclays over a $2 billion claim highlights the complexities of high-stakes financial deals, particularly when trust is breached. Despite the court ruling in favor of Barclays, the judge acknowledged Stavely's entrepreneurial acumen, indicating that the fallout from this case could have lasting implications for investor confidence in similar transactions.

The case underscores the importance of transparency and integrity in financial dealings, especially in strategic relationships involving sovereign wealth. Smart money should note that even successful deals can lead to protracted legal disputes, which may affect future investment strategies and partnerships.

So I wanted to hear how it came together. So Barclays, you say there's this big opportunity, you see the markets are going haywire, they need funding and you think I can step in. Yes, which was really, that was ballsy, that was ballsy, that was brave. But when you're 34, you've got a lot less to lose. I knew the capital markets would fall apart. It was a catastrophic, terrifying moment. Liquidity was non-existent. CDS rates were through the roof. I was very convinced about my business plan. I absolutely knew that Barclays would go and look for an external bailout. I knew they didn't. Because someone told you or? Just knew. We literally said, we've got capital, we're raising capital. We thought that the government will offer the RBS, sorry, the government will probably say, we want a rich deal in terms of the bond. So we felt that the reserve capital note that we eventually did would be, the government would have been doing quite a high coupon. So we'd actually be able to force Barclays to pay us an equally high coupon on the bond side. We went and said we can invest about three billion. We noticed that Qatar were already pretty much at their limit to what they could invest in the bank without a full takeover. So we thought we might be the only game in town. But we hadn't raised the money. So we...

Amanda Stavely's strategic insight during the financial crisis positioned her to capitalize on Barclays' need for external funding, showcasing her ability to navigate turbulent markets. Her confidence in the capital markets and understanding of investor dynamics allowed her to propose a significant investment plan despite the prevailing liquidity crisis.

The non-obvious takeaway is Stavely's recognition of the competitive landscape, particularly her awareness that Qatar was nearing its investment limit in Barclays, which positioned her firm as a potentially unique player in the bailout scenario. This highlights the importance of understanding not just market conditions, but also the strategic positioning of other investors in high-stakes situations.

This week I'm speaking to Amanda Stavely, founder and chief executive of investment and advisory firm PCP Capital Partners. Stavely has built a career earning the trust of Middle East investors. That trust put her at the center of some of Britain's biggest corporate deals, including the sale of the Manchester City Football Club to Abu Dhabi's Royal Family and the United Arab Emirates bailout of Barclays during the financial crisis. Those headline-making transactions made Stavely one of the most recognizable deal makers in Britain. But what is more interesting to me is how she got there. She went to Cambridge to study modern languages, but dropped out to become an entrepreneur. Stavely then ran a restaurant in the heart of Britain's horse racing country, a place where Middle Eastern royals, business leaders, and fan-ein seers regularly crossed paths. And that's where she began cultivating some of her most significant business relationships. So when I sat down with Stavely, I wanted to understand what it really takes to earn the trust of some of the world's most powerful investors.
Analysis

Amanda Stavely, founder of PCP Capital Partners, emphasizes the importance of establishing trust with Middle Eastern investors, which has been pivotal in her role in major corporate deals like the sale of Manchester City Football Club. Her journey from studying modern languages to becoming a key figure in high-stakes finance illustrates the value of personal relationships in securing significant investments.

Stavely's unique background and entrepreneurial spirit highlight a non-traditional path to success in finance, suggesting that building genuine connections can be as crucial as formal education. Assumptions. Linda, are you ready for the rapid-fire questions? All right. What's your take on career coaches? I think career coaches are helpful because they basically can be mirrors to you. They get you to ask the right questions, but you in the end have to figure out what the answers to those are. What is one leadership practice that you think is overrated? Empowerment is what people think about. And what I mean by that is often when people think about empowerment, they have a rather smushy, very technical term definition. Empowerment simply means that you're sharing with people the potential to have influence. So whether or not they get to exercise that potential is your call. And I think sometimes people like, 'I empowered them.' Well, you know what? In the end, it's on you. So you need to make sure that they actually know what they need to know or they're going in the right direction. Otherwise, you need to take back that potential and you need to tell them not this time. What leadership skill will matter more in 10 years than it does today? In 10 years, I think your capacity to collaborate will continue to matter a lot and more as you move forward. What's a piece of advice about management that you disagree with? That you need to make sure that people know you're the boss. That feels very 80s. But it's very present right now. I don't know if it might feel very 80s, but trust me, there are many people who want you to...
Analysis

Career coaches are viewed as valuable tools for self-reflection and guidance, but ultimately, individuals must find their own answers. The concept of empowerment in leadership is often misunderstood, as it requires leaders to ensure their team members are adequately prepared to exercise their influence effectively.

Collaboration will become increasingly crucial in leadership over the next decade, contrasting with outdated management styles that emphasize authority. The evolving landscape of leadership necessitates a shift away from traditional power dynamics towards fostering teamwork and shared decision-making.

You have no answer, you have no vision to tell people, this is it. So what's happening right now is that many leaders have no vision about what's really going on with AI. They just don't. When you ask them, they're perplexed. So what they do know is they have a— which is maybe honesty, right? That's honest. People that say, actually I know, and you know, at this juncture in time, maybe we don't know. No, we don't know. So that's why we call that wayfinding as opposed to pathfinding. So the wayfinding is we don't know the destination, nonetheless how we're gonna get there. That requires a lot of confidence in your capacity to help people figure this thing out. So we were talking about a leader; he was the head of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, an unbelievable hospital. I mean, this is a man who's a Rhodes scholar, a pioneer in robotic surgery, cardiac surgery, just a brilliant individual. And when I was talking to him once about his leadership, he said, I feel like I'm leading through a fog, and how do you lead when you can't see when you have no vision? Leadership is about vision. I have no vision. I can't see. Things are so uncertain right now. One of the things that he said was, I thought I should steer the ship, but where am I staring at, too? That's not, he said, so he said, you know what I need to do? My job is first, convince everyone in this organization that there is nothing called business as usual. We'd like to think there is nothing. Everything is a working hypothesis.
Analysis

Leaders are struggling to articulate a clear vision in the face of uncertainty surrounding AI advancements, leading to a reliance on 'wayfinding' rather than definitive pathfinding. This lack of clarity is prompting leaders to acknowledge the absence of a 'business as usual' mindset, emphasizing the need for adaptability in a rapidly changing environment.

Smart money should note that the current leadership landscape is characterized by a significant shift towards embracing uncertainty, which may create opportunities for companies that can effectively navigate this ambiguity. The emphasis on collaboration and transparency within organizations could lead to more innovative approaches and strategic partnerships as firms seek to redefine their operational frameworks.

Even as board members, no, because I don't think board members like to have conflict. You know, conflict is complicated. So sometimes, and we've all been in situations where do we bring it up or not? It's there whether you bring it up or not, and it's going to play out in different ways. But I think CEOs or board chairs or lead chairs understand that nowadays, given what's going on, we need to talk; we need to say, what is our risk appetite? As we begin to, for instance, roll out AI solutions. And that conversation is a really hard one to have. I mean, I work with some of our board programs, and how do we have that so we don't make that person look like, oh, you're too conservative, or you're resistant to the future? Is it different being a leader than being a manager? So this is the distinction that my mentor, John Cotter, so John Cotter was the person who recruited me to come to Harvard Business School, and Warren Benes, also, they talked about leadership and management. So leadership is about dealing with change; management is about dealing with complexity. We have complexity and change happening now. So what they found is for many large companies, he and Warren both found that large companies over time for very logical reasons, what you'll find is companies will be over-managed and under-led. And people often think of that under-led as going back to this issue of charisma. No, it was about vision. There's different ways you can communicate that, etc. So what I found though when I began to look at innovation is that innovation.
Analysis

The conversation highlights the growing need for CEOs and board members to engage in difficult discussions about risk appetite, especially regarding the rollout of AI solutions. This shift indicates a broader recognition that leadership must adapt to the complexities of modern business environments, where change and innovation are paramount.

The distinction between leadership and management is emphasized, suggesting that many companies are currently over-managed and under-led. This insight points to a potential opportunity for investors to identify firms that prioritize visionary leadership over mere operational efficiency.

Co-CEOs were put in that position because neither one actually covered everything that the business is going towards. You have to have a clear division of labor when you have two in the box, if you will. I am getting ready to work with another client who just put in place co-CEOs because a lot of times people are feeling overwhelmed with everything happening right now. To deal with the dynamism, we need to assess our competence and how that will play out, which is why we see more of a team structure. This trend reflects a shift towards team structures in leadership, emphasizing the need for diverse skill sets to address both current operations and future growth strategies.

Companies, including Netflix, Oracle, Spotify, and Comcast, have embraced the model, even though history suggests it's often a difficult balancing act, one that's frequently undone by competing egos, blurred accountability, or disagreements over strategy. So I wanted to ask Linda Hill when does shared leadership actually work, and what does it take for two people to successfully lead as one? And so Linda, talk to me a little bit. There's a movement in having co-CEOs; we see it in technology companies more because often there's the tech person who's the tech visionary.
Analysis

The rise of co-CEOs is becoming a notable trend among companies like Netflix, Oracle, Spotify, and Comcast, despite the historical challenges associated with this leadership model. Successful shared leadership requires a delicate balance of vision and strategy, particularly in tech firms where distinct roles often emerge between technical and operational leaders.

Smart money should recognize that the effectiveness of co-CEOs hinges on their ability to collaborate without competing egos, which can lead to blurred accountability. This model may offer innovative advantages in rapidly evolving sectors, but investors should remain cautious of the potential for internal conflict that could disrupt strategic alignment.

Joe Missoula, the head coach of the Celtics, and I studied him when he first became coach and then the year after when they finally won the championship for the 18th time. When you said charisma, I was just blown away with how deliberate he was about everything he does. Now, you may not know, the Celtics have won the most championships of any basketball team in the world, but when he came in, there had just been a scandal. He came in as an interim to a fairly beloved coach. He was not the one everyone thought should be the successor. He came from, quote, the back bench as opposed to the front bench. That's usually who becomes the head coach. Then he just got to it. He got to work. He is so grounded in who he is, but he really understood that he needed to take care of the whole man. They're all men, right? Obviously on this basketball team. They are young men who, and he was, I think, 34 or 35; he's one of the youngest coaches. He needed to take care of the whole person if they were going to win. He needed to consider the spiritual, intellectual, and physical aspects of playing sports. He understood the pressures on them and created the space for each individual to do what he needed to do, but then also to think about the culture of the whole. When he set up, when he got into this role, at first he didn't change very much because he needed to let them play it out, and it was a tough time. He needed to deal with their stresses. It wasn't about.
Analysis

Joe Missoula, the head coach of the Celtics, demonstrated a deliberate approach to leadership that emphasizes the holistic development of his players. His ability to navigate a challenging transition period and focus on individual and team culture has been pivotal in their championship success.

Smart money should note that effective leadership in high-pressure environments requires not just tactical acumen but also emotional intelligence and an understanding of team dynamics. Missoula's strategy of prioritizing the well-being of his players may serve as a model for leaders across industries, particularly in fostering resilience and performance under stress.

If you have very talented, passionate people and you let them say what they think, they're not letting go easily. So you, as a leader, have to be able to take those talented, passionate people and kind of, if you've unleashed their ideas, now you have to leverage and harness them to make sure you get some good solution out of it. Many people are not really comfortable with conflict. So when we were studying at the time, the man who was building out the infrastructure of Google early on, it's really an incredible time, pace that they had to work, etc. He was quite comfortable with conflict. And he said, you're hiring them for their ideas. And if you don't get those ideas, then shame on you. So he said, actually in talking to him, and I'm using paraphrasing now, it's been a while he said, you know, you need to have top chefs. And if you can't work with top chefs and get them to cook a delicious meal that someone wants to buy, then you're not going to be a very good CEO. It goes back to being about hiring people who are smarter than you. It's not like you're trying to hire mediocre chefs. But I remember, you know, someone said, well, you can't do that because you'll have too many cooks in the kitchen. He said, you know how hard it is to do business nowadays? You can never have too many cooks in the kitchen. You need talented people. It's on you to figure out how to convince those people that they benefit from working collaboratively together and working through their differences. Is that the only way to foster innovation? So what you're talking about is a chief executive has to, you know, I guess not mind abrasiveness. They're nurturing people. They need to get along and influence.
Analysis

Successful leadership hinges on the ability to harness the ideas of talented individuals, especially in high-stakes environments like Google. A CEO must embrace conflict and leverage diverse perspectives to foster innovation and collaboration among top talent.

The insight here is that effective leaders are not just managers but facilitators who can navigate interpersonal dynamics and encourage open dialogue. This approach is crucial in today's competitive landscape, where innovation is driven by collaboration among skilled professionals.

Two of my business partners worked with Steve Jobs for many years. One of the things that Steve Jobs understood is that most action that happens is collective action. There'd be times when Steve Bing in the room was not going to be possible because he was going to throw off the dynamic too much. Not because he couldn't behave well, necessarily, but because other people would be uncomfortable with him. So he would remove himself. Other times, you need him there, right? So again, being aware and him trusting Ed well enough to say, 'Not this meeting,' and Ed has unbelievable emotional intelligence on every dimension, but he knew how to, if you think about the stars they had at Pixar, he understood people and what they needed and didn't need and what the dynamics would be of a group if a certain mix was there and if they had certain decisions to make. He thought, 'It's not the right mix.' Then he had no problem saying to you, 'Steve, you can't come.' But as you become more senior, people don't give you feedback. That's mistake number one. You need to be sure that you have an organization that tells you when problems crop up. Right, and many senior people do not have organizations like that. They will tell you that; they will admit it. One of the big issues about this is some CEOs, you can only approach one-on-one. You have to make sure they, you know, you're not embarrassing them or whatever. Others see...
Analysis

Steve Jobs understood the importance of collective action and the dynamics of group decision-making, often removing himself from meetings to maintain harmony. Senior leaders often lack feedback mechanisms, which can hinder their awareness of organizational issues and dynamics.

All that person is a good person, bad person, resistant, whatever. What is it about their context that is leading them to prioritize in ways that aren't consistent with what the company needs? Or are they constrained in some way that if I relieve that constraint, they begin to behave in ways that the company really needs? So I think that the first thing you need to do is, yes, you need to have emotional intelligence, but you also need to have that contextual intelligence to be able to read things. They often find that being a little bit more vulnerable actually opens you up to getting more assistance; figuring out how to ask for help actually becomes harder as you become more senior. Yeah, in the executives we speak to, I think clarity of mind is always something that surprises me because they know exactly what they want to do. Then you also must be not afraid to get outshone by anyone. Yes. Otherwise... And that's difficult. Yes. What you need is you need CEOs who fundamentally know that they're there for the enterprise. It's not about them. So I almost always start by saying, think about not the rights and privileges that come with being a CEO, but the duties and obligations. And people can tell if you care, if you actually are concerned about the bigger picture or not because you're going to make many unpopular decisions, or I shouldn't say unpopular, controversial decisions because they're tough decisions to be made and you're going to have to deal with trade-offs, and they want to know about your character. And then fundamentally, do you know how to make connections? If you can't connect with people, then they're not going to want to be...
Analysis

The discussion emphasizes the importance of contextual intelligence and emotional intelligence for effective leadership, highlighting that understanding the constraints faced by team members can lead to better organizational outcomes. Successful CEOs prioritize the enterprise over personal recognition, making tough decisions that reflect their character and ability to connect with others.

Smart money should note that leaders who embrace vulnerability and seek assistance may foster a more collaborative environment, which can enhance overall performance. Throughout this season on the podcast, I've been asking industry leaders how they've navigated big decisions, managed crises, and built successful organizations. So in this conversation, I turned that idea on its head. I used my time with Hill, someone who has spent an entire career studying leadership, to ask what actually makes a great boss, what characteristics are indicators of success, and how she thinks artificial intelligence could shape the next C-suite generation. Linda, thank you so much for joining us. You've been studying leadership and management for decades. What have you learned that makes a successful CEO a successful leader? A successful leader, I think, really has to know himself or herself because it really starts with you. You're trying to use yourself as an instrument to get things done. And if you don't know yourself, it's hard to do.

Your city, this is your country. I know even when you were president though, the security situation meant that you could not move around as freely as you would have wished to. But it does sound like a form of house arrest. I'm fine. I don't complain. My personal situation is really insignificant to what we need to do for Afghanistan. So it's really nothing. I mean, it doesn't even occur to me that I have these issues. No, it's the work that we need to do for the country that is the greatest of my concerns and worries. So if they asked you, come be in the government, take control of a ministry, or have some other role, would you say yes? No. You're shaking your head. No, I would not say yes. I don't need to be in the government. I've done my time in office. I did what I could for the country. But I want to live in a country where girls can go to school, where there can be a future for this country. And that is what I want. That's what I'm working on. I'm not challenging people in government, this or any other government. What I want is a living, vibrant society.

The former president of Afghanistan emphasizes his commitment to the country's future over personal political ambitions, expressing a desire for a society where girls can attend school. He critiques the current government's approach and highlights the importance of a vibrant society for Afghanistan's progress.

And they accuse the Afghan Taliban of supporting the insurgency in Balochistan and supporting militants like the Pakistani Taliban. That is the picture from their perspective. And I wonder how you think this can be resolved. Is it Chinese mediation? Is it some other country trying to step in? Militancy is wrong. And militancy is what Pakistan used against Afghanistan. An effort for peace between Afghanistan and Pakistan. I think Britain is one of the countries with a deep relationship historically with Pakistan and Afghanistan. During my time in office, that is my advice today. And I wish both of them well. I want them to be wiser and to work it out rather than to fight it out. Do you think the U.S. was wrong to start this war in Iran? It was a terrible mistake and I made a statement at the end when this war started, asking all the United States that this was not right. And how do you think it is going to be resolved? How can it be resolved? Well, at this stage, I would ask both Iran and the United States both to choose diplomacy and talks over fighting and attacks on each other. Well, the country that's playing a role in all of that is Pakistan, with which you have a long and difficult relationship, and with which the Taliban is at war, essentially, these strikes that have been taking place across the border. Do you welcome Pakistan's role between the U.S. and Iran? Pakistan has done well. Pakistan acted very promptly and smartly and we appreciate it. And I hope they continue to do the same and they shouldn't give up. There is an irony in the fact that you and others for so long have accused Pakistan of supporting the Taliban before they returned to power. And now those two are fighting each other.
Analysis

The former Afghan president criticized the U.S. for its military actions in Afghanistan, labeling the initiation of the Iran conflict as a 'terrible mistake' and advocating for diplomacy over aggression. He acknowledged Pakistan's role in mediating between the U.S. and Iran, despite a historically fraught relationship with the Taliban, suggesting a complex geopolitical landscape that could influence regional stability.

One is that of assistance and support and reconstruction and betterment, without a doubt. And we are grateful for that to the American people for the money that they sent to Afghanistan for the millions of Afghan educated youth that we have today, not only the Americans, the Europeans, and other countries and neighbors. All of that is magnificent. There's also this illicit, unfortunately, a very sad side of bombardment of four villages, of bombardment of four homes, of barging into our homes, and of raids, and of creating prisons, which I strongly, strongly disagreed with. And I was absolutely right to disagree. So what does your experience lead you to conclude as you look at the last few months and the war between the U.S. and Iran? And what appears to have been a desire for regime change in Iran, which obviously hasn't happened, what do you see when you look at that situation? The discussion highlights the duality of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, acknowledging both the support for education and reconstruction as well as the negative impacts of military actions. The speaker emphasizes the importance of an educated population for Afghanistan's future while expressing discontent with the U.S. military operations that undermined local stability.

The combination of Afghanistan's efforts with its allies was significant. When they came initially, things flourished very well; the Afghan people's lives changed, the economy improved, and reconstruction, education, and health services advanced. However, I ran into difficulties with the United States over military operations in Salat gas, which targeted homes and villages, creating prisons for the Afghan people. The reason for these actions was the perceived threat from the resurgence of the Taliban. By 2010, my relationship with the Americans had deteriorated considerably, as they emphasized that the Taliban were responsible for more civilian casualties than coalition forces. I do not believe that statement is true. The country became peaceful, millions of refugees returned from Pakistan, Iran, and the West, and the country flourished. Many of the difficulties our country suffered in the past 40 years were because of the extremely difficult environment that our country found itself in, and right from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan until today, the only time that children got the opportunity to educate themselves and did it wonderfully all over the country, boys and girls, was the 20 years of the Republic. This produced a huge, huge number of educated men and women in Afghanistan. The centre of this episode probably at that point had little hope of change in his country, Afghanistan, where the Taliban group with their hardline interpretation of Islam had been in control for some years. But as it turned out, everything changed in Hamid Karzai's life in the weeks after 9-11. From being a little-known tribal leader, he was named as his country's interim leader and was then elected president. His nearly 13 years in office were difficult on a number of fronts: security, corruption allegations, a deteriorating relationship with Washington, and ultimately the resurgence of the Taliban, who retook Afghanistan five years ago. By then, Hamid Karzai was no longer president, but unlike most of his peers, he did not leave the country at that point. He remained in Kabul, where he still lives today in circumstances you'll hear him describe, which I would call a form of house arrest. He does few interviews, and in fact, he wasn't at all sure about the podcast world when we reached out. But with the 9-11 anniversary approaching, it felt like an important moment to understand what he sees as he looks back and to talk about everyday life in Kabul now, his family, and the fact that his daughters, like all Afghan girls, are banned from going to school after the age of 12.

Context changes everything. How do we build a good country? By divisions and conflict? Or by cooperation and understanding each other's point of view? Just like you do in your own country. Why should we be the only country in the world fighting it out? Hamid Karzai, who came to power in Afghanistan after 9/11, only to see the Taliban return. Are you having to consider sending your own children overseas to try and complete their education? As a father, it is my responsibility to provide them the best education, especially to girls. But as a citizen of Afghanistan, it is also my responsibility to have my own country ready for educating girls. If I take my daughter out abroad, it will mean that we have given up.

That's a very good question. I would say that we have invested a huge amount to build capacity and scale. The path ahead is really about building partnerships with companies who have the capacity to expand what we already have. I mean, I basically could have used yeast to make beer, but now I use yeast to make insulin. So... Amazing. I think that actually that's cooler than using yeast to make beer. Well, both are cool. By the end of 2024, at least one major player, Novornautisk, said it would invest billions into making GLP-1s while phasing out some insulin products. What would make you consider going all in into GLP-1? I think one of the things we have to be a bit, you know, aware of is that generic GLP-1s is a crowded market so it's not about going all in; it's about being competitive and being realistic about your market share. So you don't envision a scenario where perhaps you might be focusing more on GLP-1 versus insulin the way some of your competitors have done, your Eli Lillys and Synovuses? Well, for them it's very different because they have a limited window of opportunity for each GLP-1, and then they are introducing newer GLP-1s. Basically, the capacities that they have for insulins are being diverted to GLP-1s, and they will continue to do that. For us, actually, we've got two separate facilities. We have a large peptide facility for GLP-1s. We also have a fill-and-finish for GLP-1s, and we have a very large fill-and-finish for the insulins as well. So yes, it is going to be a handful of countries who are going to be able to do that. And why do I keep on emphasizing that India is going to be part of that group of nations? Is because you cannot do anything without talent. And of course, you will need infrastructure. So the infrastructure is what Europe is building, what Korea is building, what the US is building, and what now India is trying to build. And the infrastructure also needs talent. So both are required, right? You need talent and infrastructure. And India at the moment has talent and infrastructure mismatched. You have huge talent, but the infrastructure is developing. I couldn't find a job. Take us to those days in 1978. That was a very tough year for me because I'd come back from Australia a few years before that and I had assumed that I would be nabbed by all the breweries in India, and that was not to be because I was shown the door by every single brewery saying this is not a woman's job. This is not a career I should even think of pursuing. So there was a huge gender bias I felt. And I was then forced to look for jobs overseas. And I did get myself a job in Scotland, would you believe it? And I was going to use that as a stepping stone to get a better job. But an accidental encounter with an Irish biotech entrepreneur got me to start Biocon. And that was, I think, quite an interesting time for me because I never expected that to happen. But it was tough going right from the get-go. Not only were you a woman, you were 25 years old, and the banks thought you were high risk. Analysis

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw faced significant gender bias and credibility challenges when starting Biocon in 1978, as banks were reluctant to lend to a young woman entrepreneur. Despite these obstacles, she transformed Biocon into a multi-billion dollar company focused on making healthcare more accessible through biosimilars.

The insight here is the shift from a high-margin, low-volume business model to a high-volume approach that prioritizes patient access over profit margins. This strategy not only disrupts traditional pharmaceutical pricing but also positions Biocon favorably in a market increasingly focused on affordability and humanitarian goals.

I want to help healthcare systems around the world cope with the crippling costs of drugs. I lost my best friend to breast cancer, and even she found it so expensive to afford treatment. Because of her, I started biosimilars. You've been pretty critical of Western companies, which I suppose put a lot of emphasis on margins, and you say that's not how it should be. It's not about margins; it's about the fact that we are a humanitarian industry. We are here to serve patient needs and improve the health of the planet by developing drugs that save lives. If you're going to restrict those drugs to only people who can afford them and charge such a hefty price point that most people can't afford it, then I think you're not really true to your purpose. As a driving purpose, I've always tried to disrupt this model, which was always about low volume, high value, and turn it on its head. If profits are only driven by high price, then that's a different model. My profits are driven by high volume so that I can serve more patients.
Analysis

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw emphasizes the need for the pharmaceutical industry to prioritize patient accessibility over profit margins, advocating for a model driven by high volume rather than high prices. This approach aims to disrupt the traditional profit-driven model of drug pricing, which often excludes many patients from necessary treatments.

The insight here is that companies focusing on biosimilars and affordable healthcare solutions may capture significant market share as global healthcare systems grapple with rising drug costs. Investors should note the potential for growth in firms that align their business models with humanitarian goals, as this could lead to increased demand and loyalty from patients and healthcare providers alike.

The Imperial Valley is making investments in farm efficiency projects while maintaining their high-priority rights to water. We received the water that, as I suggested, would otherwise have been cut by 50%. Similarly, Arizona and Nevada get water, and for the Water Authority, we get inventory off of our books. Inventory off the books in the form of water means more flattening of rates out into the future. We can dampen the rate increases that have been really tough for us over the past three years. Does it mean that those states will not have to cut back as much? Yes. Desalination can create a new supply, but it can't put water back in the Colorado River. It shows what scarcity pricing looks like when the cheap supply is no longer enough. This water at the desalination plant, the most expensive, costs $3,500 a unit. Some of the other sources that we have are $50 a unit, some are $800 a unit, and some are $600 a unit. All together, it's $1,400 a unit. And that's what makes this more affordable if it's just the only option you have. Desalination is expensive, but quite honestly, we have not paid what our water is worth to us. So we need to make that adjustment in our minds.
Analysis

The Imperial Valley is making investments in farm efficiency projects while maintaining high-priority water rights, which could mitigate the impact of water cuts for Arizona and Nevada. However, desalination, while providing new supply, cannot replenish the Colorado River, highlighting the challenges of water scarcity pricing as costs for water units vary significantly.

The impact reaches far beyond the Southwest. In the winter, much of the food that feeds American families across the country comes from desert farming regions like the Imperial Valley. Most of the population thinks that the food that they buy at the grocery store shows up in the back. They don't know that it comes from a source, that it's produced. A lot of hands and labor and blood, sweat, and tears goes into producing all the bounty that we share in. Are you able to use less water? There are areas where there is efficiency that can be gained. It just costs money. Utilizing systems like drip, overhead sprinkler systems, automated flood systems, and tell water return systems, all these different uses of technology, but they're very expensive and costly. Unfortunately, the least expensive way to get water off of farms has been following. And following, around here we call it the F word. It's extremely detrimental to our communities. It puts people out of work. This was not a cheap installation, I would imagine. No, this half-mile system that irrigates 180 acres was a half-million-dollar capital expenditure. To be sustainable, we also have to be economical and profitable as a business. The benefit, though, is with this system I can produce more crop. Analysis

The ongoing water crisis in the American Southwest is impacting food production, with farmers in regions like the Imperial Valley facing significant challenges due to water scarcity. The high costs of implementing efficient irrigation technologies are pushing some farmers to reduce their water usage, which could have broader implications for food supply across the nation.

Smart money should note that while some regions are adapting through technology, the overall water scarcity could lead to increased food prices and economic strain in agricultural sectors. Farmers in California are probably feeling like, well, we got it better because we're what they call senior rights to Arizona. But California is still going to have to take some cuts also. Looking at the upper basin, we've been taking cuts every year during this drop. That old legal order is not abstract. The Colorado River supports $1.4 trillion of economic activity every year and jobs for 16 million Americans. I sell this crop by the ton, by the pound. One of those Americans is Andrew Limegruber, whose farm in California's Imperial Valley has been run by his family for generations. We are the big target on the river because we are such a large user of water, but we're also the highest in priority. The way it works in the West, the first person to use the water beneficially, first in line. We have a system of laws in place that would have dealt with this crisis before.
Analysis

Arizona is preparing for a significant reduction of 760,000 acre-feet of water, indicating a critical shortage that will impact all seven states sharing the Colorado River. The economic implications are profound, as the river supports $1.4 trillion in economic activity and jobs for 16 million Americans, highlighting the urgency of reaching a consensus on water distribution.

The ongoing negotiations reveal a complex legal framework that may not adequately address the current crisis, as states with senior water rights, like California, still face cuts. This situation underscores the fragility of water resources in the West, suggesting that agricultural sectors heavily reliant on the Colorado River may experience significant disruptions, impacting food supply and economic stability.

Then we had this really unusual March heat wave, and that triggered this really abrupt and really early snow melt, leading to this really catastrophic situation in terms of snowpack as a whole across the western U.S., and conditions are probably the worst in the Colorado River basin right now. That lack of snowpack is now showing up in the system's balance sheet. Lake Mead, which hit its lowest level since it was filled 90 years ago, and Lake Powell are the two biggest reservoirs in the country. Both of their water levels have been declining for decades. This year, some of the rules governing the river are expiring. And with the seven states unable to reach a long-term agreement, the federal government is stepping in to divide the waters. So now we're down to the nitty gritty. Who gets it and who doesn't? And you have governors, representatives, and they're concerned about their constituents. They're concerned about the economy. They're concerned about food security. But there's only so much in the river. And as they just couldn't come to an agreement. In the lower basin, the reclamation is called the Water Master. They control the contracts. In the upper basin, we don't have a large federal reservoir. So we don't have a way to call for that water and have it delivered. It's just a natural process. So each state is in control of its.
Analysis

The Colorado River basin is facing a critical water shortage due to an unusual March heat wave that triggered early snowmelt, leading to historically low water levels in Lake Mead and Lake Powell. With the expiration of key water governance rules and no long-term agreement among the seven states, the federal government is stepping in to allocate water resources, raising concerns over economic and food security for affected states.

Smart money should note that the inability to reach a consensus among states could lead to federal intervention that disrupts local economies and agricultural outputs. As water scarcity intensifies, the implications for energy generation and agricultural productivity in the Western U.S. could create significant market volatility in related sectors.

Across the Southwest, starting in the Rocky Mountains, the river begins as snow, which melts and provides water to the upper basin, made up of Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, and the lower basin, which includes California, Nevada, and Arizona. The water makes its way to kitchen sinks and front lawns, but also crops and businesses and reservoirs which generate power for the cities in the Western US. Lake Powell is very close to what they call the power pool, and that means that once the reservoir is below that level, it can't push the water through the turbines to create power. That's going to affect power supply. Jennifer Gimbal is a water policy scholar and former Bureau of Reclamation official. She says the river's legal framework was built in layers, beginning with a compact in 1922, but a lot has changed since then. We have no safety net now. When all those other agreements were signed, a decent amount of water was in the reservoir. But no longer. This winter, the Rocky Mountains saw the lowest snowpack ever recorded, and less snow means less water downstream. Dan McAvoy is a climatologist at the Western Regional Climate Center, where he has been tracking snowpack levels across the West. Why is snowpack so important? Yeah, it's critical to pretty much all of the western United States in terms of water supply.
Analysis

The Colorado River's dwindling water supply poses significant risks to power generation and agricultural sectors in the Western US. With the lowest recorded snowpack this winter, the legal framework governing water distribution is under strain, highlighting the urgent need for policy reevaluation.

Smart money should note that the current water crisis could lead to increased volatility in energy prices and agricultural outputs, as power generation becomes compromised. The lack of a safety net in the existing agreements suggests potential for future regulatory changes that could impact investment strategies in these sectors.

Analysis

The ongoing tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum are negatively impacting US manufacturing, particularly in the auto sector, which relies heavily on cross-border supply chains. The potential for permanent tariffs on cars and parts raises concerns about the future of US-Canada trade relations and the competitiveness of Detroit's auto industry.

Smart money should note that the distinction between US-made and NAFTA-compliant parts in tariff exemptions could significantly influence manufacturing costs and supply chain dynamics. The current trade environment suggests a shift towards managed trade, which may alter long-standing economic relationships and strategies in the automotive sector.

Specifically, are US-made parts that are excluded from the tariffs or whether it is NAFTA-compliant parts? You mentioned the USMCA, which you know well having negotiated it. As far as we can tell with this, as I say, tentative agreement, how does it fit with USMCA? Is it an amendment to it? Does it supersede it? Is it subservient to it? How does it fit? It seems like it's completely separate. It seems like this is like so many of the deals that the Trump administration has been doing around the world. This is a one-off. It is about, you know, the U.S. creating a wound, creating a problem for its partner, and then entering into a negotiation with its partner to have the problem limited. So it's not connected with the USMCA and with the negotiations that have been triggered around the USMCA. And that is a challenge because there's going to be a big question about whether some of the key issues that have been agreed in this deal automatically carry over to the USMCA negotiation. You know so well from your Canadian background that the United States trade policy in recent years has, shall I say, bruised some feelings north of our border.
Analysis

The U.S. and Canada have reached a tentative agreement that will prevent the implementation of new tariffs on Canada, originally set for August 19. However, Canada appears to be conceding to lower tariffs on steel, aluminum, cars, and car parts, which raises concerns about the long-term implications for U.S.-Canada trade relations.

Smart money should note that while the agreement may alleviate immediate tariff threats, the acceptance of permanent tariffs by Canada could signal a shift in trade dynamics, potentially weakening Canadian manufacturing and impacting U.S. industries reliant on Canadian inputs. The separation of this deal from the USMCA raises questions about its broader implications for future negotiations and trade policy.

A better situation compared to what we have before the agreement. It will be worse though than the USMCA where there were no tariffs. And I think the concern for anyone in the car sector will be, are we moving to a situation of permanent tariffs on cars and car parts? Something to watch in the details of the agreement is whether car parts made in NAFTA are excluded from the tariffs in the NAFTA zone or whether only car parts made in the U.S. are excluded from the tariffs. That's a really important distinction. When we were negotiating the USMCA, there was a moment when Bob Lighthizer wanted to include a provision that would require that a certain percentage of a car be manufactured in the U.S. Canada and I personally were really, really opposed to that because then you don't have a free trade deal. You have managed trade and that's an entirely different principle. Ultimately, it's an entirely different way of running your economy. But what Bob was worried about was protecting workers' wages, which was something I did support. So, what we have...
Analysis

The U.S. and Canada have reached a tentative agreement that will prevent new tariffs from being imposed on Canada, particularly concerning steel, aluminum, and automotive sectors. However, Canada appears to be conceding to the legitimacy of existing tariffs, which raises concerns about the long-term implications for trade relations and the auto industry in both countries.

The acceptance of permanent tariffs by Canada, despite having a free trade agreement, signals a significant shift in trade dynamics that could weaken Canadian manufacturing and impact U.S. industries reliant on Canadian inputs. Smart money should consider the potential backlash from Canadian unions and the broader implications for U.S.-Canada trade relations moving forward.

Canadian steel and Canadian aluminum hurts U.S. manufacturing. These are inputs into the U.S. manufacturing sector, and you are choosing to make your own manufacturers weaker. The tariffs that were imposed in 2018 have been the subject of many academic studies, and the net impact was harming U.S. manufacturing. Aluminum tariffs are particularly self-harming because aluminum is basically electricity in solid form. So the U.S. is essentially imposing a tax on electricity. David, you are from Michigan originally, and you know that Canada and the United States build cars together. We've done it for more than a century. Imposing permanent tariffs on cars and car parts is really going to hurt Detroit. I think Canadians are real patriots and want to support our Prime Minister in this challenging time. However, I think you're going to hear Canadian unions, who represent workers in the car sector, steel, and aluminum, express significant concern. You mentioned the auto industry, which is central to U.S.-Canadian trade relations. As you know, there are auto parts that go back and forth between Windsor and Detroit several times in the making of a single vehicle.
Analysis

The U.S. and Canada appear to be nearing a tentative agreement that would prevent the implementation of new tariffs on Canadian goods, particularly in the steel and aluminum sectors. However, Canada seems poised to accept the legitimacy of existing tariffs, marking a significant concession that could have lasting implications for U.S.-Canada trade relations.

Smart money should note that the acceptance of permanent tariffs by Canada, despite a free trade agreement, signals a shift in trade dynamics that could weaken Canadian manufacturing and raise concerns among Canadian unions representing workers in key sectors like automotive and steel. This development may lead to increased scrutiny of U.S. manufacturing costs and competitiveness in the auto industry, particularly in Detroit.
